Periodontal disease is characterised as a long-lasting inflammatory condition of the oral tissues that destroys the periodontium and results in the loss of supporting bone and soft tissue clinical attachment. Mechanical removal of bacterial deposits and calculus is crucial in the management of periodontal disorders. The mechanical removal and destruction of bacterial colonies from the tooth and root surfaces constitutes nonsurgical periodontal treatment. Scalers that are manual, acoustic, or ultrasonic can do this. By using hand tools, abnormalities in the roots that harbour plaque and calculus can be removed. The most important element for clinical efficacy is sharp hand tools. Due to their ability to remove calculus more quickly than manual instruments and to lessen operator fatigue, powered scalers improve the effectiveness of nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Based on their operating frequencies, powered instruments are divided into sonic and ultrasonic categories. Magnetostrictive or piezoelectric devices can produce ultrasound. Understanding how they work enables the clinician to utilise them more effectively and limits harm to the tooth structures and surrounding tissues.
