Based on exceptionally rich private papers of Portuguese slave traders, this study provides unique insight into the diet, health and medical care of slaves during their journey from Africa to Peru in the early seventeenth century.

Linda A. Newson, Ph.D. (1971) in Geography, University College London, is Professor of Geography at King's College London. She has published four books and many articles on different aspects of demographic change in colonial Spanish America. She is a Fellow of the British Academy.
