In the last three decades, implant dentistry has emerged as a fully accepted discipline in dentistry. During this period of development, its concepts and treatment modalities have undergone tremendous changes. At first, only protocols involving two-stage surgery were recognized as providing reproducible and reliable results. However, the rediscovery of the immediate-loading protocols, which for decades had been considered untenable, must be viewed as a revolution. We cannot completely dismiss the possibility that this renewed interest is merely a passing fancy, but the large number of publications and studies devoted to the technique are convincing evidence of the widespread acceptance of this procedure.
