This research and reference text surveys the role of specialised thermodynamic cycles in renewable energy technologies. A range of renewable energy technologies are discussed, including solar thermal, ocean, wind and geothermal energy. The relative properties of different thermodynamic cycles are compared, identifying optimal strategies for their effective implementation and combination.
The book discusses opportunities for energy harvesting and applications to the renewable energy field, innovations which have the potential to revolutionise the technologies by increasing their efficiency. The latest innovations in the technology of the Rankine, Stirling, Brayton, Kalina, Goswami and OTEC Rankine cycles are also analysed. Discussing the relationship between thermodynamic parameters and renewable energy applications, the book covers the use of novel working fluids, innovative storage of thermodynamic power and waste heat utilisation. It also covers the challenges faced by some of the existing engines. Concepts and applications are introduced through clear diagrams, including solved and unsolved problems, case studies, end-of-chapter summaries and practical examples that equip the reader to engage practically with the subject.
An invaluable reference for researchers and advanced students in the field of renewable and sustainable power, the book also provides useful supplementary reading for advanced courses in renewable energies and energy systems.
